This week, the shadowy American Legislative Exchange Council hits Salt Lake City for its 39th-annual meeting, and local activists are hosting events to show the corporate-driven, law-sponsoring organization that not everyone in town is rolling out the red carpet. This weekend, you can get a crash course on civil disobedience with nonviolent direct-action training sponsored by Peaceful Uprising. On Saturday, you can also run a 5K to benefit the Friends in Need Animal Sanctuary. On Wednesday, welcome ALEC in style by attending the ALEC Exposed Workshop.
Nonviolent Direct Action Training
Saturday-Sunday, July 21-22
Get a crash course in stickin’ it to the man with the activists of Peaceful Uprising, who will give a historical background on the use of nonviolent tactics of civil disobedience. Saturday’s session will include a workshop from the ACLU of Utah on knowing your rights, and Sunday’s will include hands-on training for staying on message in a protest and what to expect when you’re planning on getting arrested for a cause. Race for the Rescue 5K
Saturday, July 21
The Friends in Need Animal Sanctuary & Rescue in Eagle Mountain is looking for some runners to help out the ranch’s efforts. The organization provides home to abandoned dogs, cats and other animals far from home, including water buffalo and yaks, to name a few. Registration is $25 for adults and $20 for youth ages 4 to 16. ALEC Exposed Workshop

Join the anti-ALEC conference just a block away from where the group will be spoon-feeding bills to local lawmakers.
