Somebody has been tearing up, vandalizing and stealing the Obama-Biden campaign signs on our street, and the signs' owners diligently keep replacing them. It's all part of the time-honored American political process.
It's
not quite Halloween yet, but that isn't stopping one event from
putting one of the best shows of the month you'll find anywhere on a
couple weeks early.
For
a good portion of Trax riders, this has been one of the familiar
scenes along their trip through Downtown.---
Circlegal has been leaving her mark all over Salt Lake City during
2008, displaying her stick figure designs on everything
from billboards to doorways. Showing us that the simplistic can
be just as powerful, insightful and creative as any other form of
artwork out there. And with her joining of IAO
Projects
for a number of shows, it looks like her work will be making more
appearances across the city for months to come. I got a chance
to chat with Circlegal about her work, joining IAO, her thoughts on
the scene, and a number of other questions that came to
mind.Michelle "Circlegal"

http://circlegal.com/Gavin:
Hey Michelle! First off, tell us a little bit about
yourself.Michelle: Howdy my name is Circlegal, I am
currently going by this name because it is part of another project I
am working on. I am a late 20’s early 30’s something artist
that currently lives in Salt Lake City. I am originally from
Colorado and moved here about a year and half ago from Chicago.
I also like the orange energy SoBe drink with Reese's Peanut Butter
Cups.Gavin: What first got you interested in
doing art, and what were some of your inspirations?Michelle:
I have been doing art my whole life off and on. In elementary
school I did bunches! Mostly of people and I would tell myself
stories about them in my head… crazy maybe… but hey I was an only
child and lived in the middle nowhere! I was always trying to
get them picture perfect. Through the end of middle school and
high school I never really did art…so what got me back into it was
several things.Gavin:
Did you go into any kind of education for art?
First,
let's check out the latest addition to the 337 Memorial Wall.---
And speaking of which, I didn't get a chance to show off all the
photos I took from the Urban Gallery, which you can find here.
Some pretty cool shots including that one of Adam with Carroon in front of
what looks to be a mournful Captain Kirk. It was a pretty cool
evening, and one of the last nights in the year that didn't require a
coat.Speaking of changing seasons, I like Fall. And no,
not for the leaves. There's a scent in the air that always
makes me happy. I'm not a nature know-it-all, and I'm sure one
of the weather people could tell me exactly what it is, but it's a
comforting scent that goes around in the cold air every October.
Only comes in fall, and somehow overtakes all the other smells
around. This whole week has been a good time to walk around
downtown and visit people. For the first time in, well,
ever, I know what I'm doing for the next couple weeks, Expect
interviews this week about Circlegal, "An October Evening"
and 24 Hour Comics Day. Plus a few events I'm going to attempt
to visit all in one day and get pictures for. On the calendar
side I'll now be posting events from New Song Underground, The Trapp
Door and The Boing! Collective. These last few months are
shaping up to look pretty awesome down the road, but as always we'll
see what happens.
Not
many venues have taken up residence in Sandy over the years for various
reasons. But one departing venue has left a mark on the scene that
won't soon be forgotten.
This
past Friday while a good portion of the city was at Silver Jews, I
made my way to a church. Seriously, a local venue located in a
church basement.--- New Song Underground, located very close
to 9th and 9th, has recently been playing host to some of the newest
upcoming acts in the scene, while offering audio and space that
rivals some major venues here. I popped in on Friday night to
check out four local acts who very much enjoyed the latest locale.
Scarlet Lace, Empire Of The Forgotten, We Call The Shots and Burnt
Orange. As always, I took some pictures and chatted with all the bands.Scarlet Lace
(Katie & Sara)http://www.myspace.com/scarletlacemusic Gavin: Hey guys, first off, tell us who you are and a
little about yourselves.Katie: My name's Katie Van
Sleen. I'm a sophomore at The Waterford School, I live in Draper.
While
downtown may be playing host to the usual early October event on
Sunday, just a short drive away will be another weekly Sunday event
that will go just as long... but serves food.
The
337 Project may be long gone, but the effects of it are still being
felt and giving life to whole new projects. Tonight one of
those projects is shown to the entire city, but this time on the west
side of Salt Lake. Much has been kept secret about the Urban
Gallery, unlike its predecessor where a lot of the art could be seen
from blocks away, much has been kept under raps about the new
unveiling happening this evening. In fact, beyond recent
articles about the project in the Tribune and City Weekly,
the most we've heard about the art is "garage doors."
Making it even more interesting with all the secrecy. I got a chance
to chat with Adam Price about the project, as well as plans down the
road this year.
When
it comes to film reviews, whether they be old or new, the good
majority of you will probably make your wait to a standard review
site. But for two men out of Salt Lake City, they're taking
film reviews straight to your iPod.---
A Damn Podcast takes a look at all cinema genres with nothing more
than an appreciation for movies and a six-pac of beer.
Reviewing old and new films as fans rather than critics, all while
making fun of anything and everything about them along the way.
Winning over the local audience and even winning an Artsy Award from
City Weekly this past month, the two Adam's have found their
niche in the local film community, with no signs of them to either
quit watching or drinking. I got a chance to chat with both men
about the podcast and their thoughts on many a topic, and even got to
sit in on Episode 27 for a night of photo taking, discussion and random one-liners.Adam
