I swear, I am not trying to drag all of my friends into my blog, it’s just coincidence… really… I do have my own life outside of sports… really.
Have you noticed how much play the word “really” is getting?
Anyhow, my friend Gale (who I have on occasion called “my boy”) has a favorite expression. “Have a Nice Day.” I know you’re thinking that it’s been around for EVER, but hold for a second. When Gale says “Have a Nice Day” he’s not talking about the old 1960s-70’s yellow smiley face “Have a Nice Day” where people were actually wishing you a “nice” day. Which by the way, really pissed me off. Don’t tell me what kind of day to have, it’s really none of your business. Besides, do you really care? Should I call you up the next day and say “guess what, I know you were just making change for my beer purchase, but you said ‘Have a Nice Day’ and I had a shitty day, so don’t do it again, you’re a jinx.”…?? Probably not a wise move.
No, when Gale says “Have a Nice Day” he means you just got beat down, schooled, embarrassed, game over, you were dominated, now go home and lick your wounds like the loser that you are.
See? It’s much different from the original “Have a Nice Day.”
Plus, it’s said with a certain inflection, and a touch of sarcasm.
Examples please.
Amidst rumblings that after they beat the Utes that Arizona was somehow better than everyone thought… Louisville drops 103 on them and beats Az by 40 … “have a nice day.”
Top seed in the East Pittsburgh play the best game of the tournament but Villanova beats them by 2 … “have a nice day.”
What about the Lady Huskies versus #4 seed Cal Golden Bears? Cal actually led Lady UConn by 6, late in the 1st half. Guess what? UConn scores 56, Cal scores 20. … “have a nice day.”
Men’s top overall seed in the NCAA Tournament Louisville, fresh off a beat down of Arizona, and a popular pick to win it all as well as the national champion pick in most of my brackets played Big 10 hopeful Michigan State. Ahead 34-32, Louisville’s Terrence Williams blocks a shot, then stands there, arms folded like he just turned back the Huns. Michigan State then goes on a 37-13 run to close the game beating the overall 1 seed and shutting Williams up for good. Say it with me now … “have a nice day.”
Oklahoma’s Blake Griffin, possibly the best player in the country, definitely the most dynamic creates a boat load of hype about OU’s chances at beating North Carolina to get to the Final Four. By the time Griffin scored his 1st point they were losing 19 to 6, and the game never got closer … “have a nice day.”
So thanks Gale, for turning a congenial phrase into an acerbic quip, and turning me into even more of a smartass than I already was… have a nice day.
