Race Out and Rent

The high-brow stuff warrants the most attention, with the release of Doubt and a special-edition re-release of No Country for Old Men. The former, in which John Patrick Shanley adapts his own acclaimed play about a priest suspected of misdeeds in the mid-1960s, features performances that aren't nearly as fantastic as they've been touted to be. It does, however, provide a great opportunity to become familiar with Shanley's fascinating exploration of the perils of "certainty." The latter adds a few more extras to the Coen brothers' magnificent 2007 Oscar-winner. It's worth being reminded to see it again.
For kids, there are some charms in the adaptation of The Tale of Despereaux, about a big-eared mouse with big dreams. Grown-ups ... stick to the grown-up stuff.
