Race Out and Rent

Okay, we're a day late from the date when it really would have been considered "racing out" for new DVD releases. Slowing down every once in a while is acceptable, too. ---

When you do decide to grab something, though, be sure to distinguish between two brand-new releases that both come with a Sundance provenance, and both deal with the Latino immigrant experience in America. Sin Nombre takes a familiar path in following illegal immigrants on the perilous journey across the border, accentuated only by an under-developed sub-plot about Mexican gang activity. The better bet is Sugar, from the Half Nelson filmmaking team of Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden. Algenis Perez Soto plays a Dominican baseball prospect who gets his shot at success while playing minor-league ball in the Midwest. And while it begins as a story of culture shock, it evolves into something more complex about the American dream and responding to pressure when you believe you've only got one way to make it.
