City Landlords Letting the Bedbugs Bite

In this past week’s story “Bug Out,” City Weekly reported on the infestation problem at that city’s low income housing at the State Street Single Room Occupancy (SRO) Hotel, the Regis.---
When the city encouraged residents who were being relocated to new housing facilities at the edge of town to just leave behind all their belongings, remaining tenants say the leftover garbage in over 30 abandoned rooms created fertile grounds for a cockroach and bedbug infestation. RDA Director D.J. Baxter however says the bug problem issue has been an ongoing concern relating to the hygiene of the shifting population of low-income tenants at the Regis.
The pictures presented in the story tell quite a tale of the squalor created by the sudden exodus of tenants who qualified for housing relocation, but what about the ones who have stayed?
CW certainly can’t vouch for the cleanliness of every room still occupied at the Regis but for David Sine’s room--a resident of the Regis Hotel for the last 14 years--shows it is possible to make a home out of a flophouse. Sine’s room, pictured below shows a side of the Regis many tenants have tried to show the public, even if the pictures that come out happen to not be too pretty--including the ones in our recent story. The only problem now is how to keep the room you live in clean when the 30 rooms nobody lives in are spawning an infestation.
