Real clings to the playoffs

So it's not over. Not yet.

Tonight's end of season game between Real Salt Lake and Colorado Rapids leaves the Claret-and-Cobalt, as Real's known, grinding on their nails to see if either Dallas or New England draw or lose this weekend. In that event, then they'll reportedly squeak into the play offs.---

But the match itself was a decidedly mixed affair. In front of an 18,000-strong crowd, the first half saw a nervous but fiery Real quickly pursue some elegant chances with workhorse Will Johnson in the first few minutes chasing a beautiful ball between defenders towards Colorado's goal only for the move to evaporate. But 16 minutes into the game Johnson forwarded a ball to Real stalwart Andy Williams who found forward Fabian Espindola in the box. The Argentine placed a perfect chip near the right goal post and forward Robbie Findley put it in the net.

Later in the first half Williams again fed the ball to Findley who executed a delightful over-the-head chip past the Colorado goalie, allowing a quick-footed Findley tap it into the goal. A third goal from Real sub Yura Movsisyan in a lackluster second half, which saw Real sitting back and Colorado unimpressive in their attempts to get past Real goalkeeper Nick Rimondo, meant Real tied up the game in the 85th minute.

Real's fans went home content with seeing their team back on form, delivering an easy win. But for some the inevitable question was why given the sheer range and depth of Real talent on display tonight, their fight to reach the play offs has been bedeviled by so many lackluster performances.
