Tracks of 09: Days II and III

Making up for lost time today thanks to a prolonged sickness. Seriously, the winter bug is so inconsiderate of my work load. Luckily, antibiotics have a zero tolerance policy on strep throat. Let's do this!---

We're making our Best of 2009 lists - and checking them twice - for City Weekly's Dec. 31 edition. In preview, from now until next Thursday, I'll be sharing my favorite single tracks of the year. I'd love to hear what rocked your world in the dwindling days of the oughts.

Sunset/Sunrise builds on The Dutchess and The Duke's stripped-down sound with added layers and more obviously intimate, dark lyrical content that sheds some light on the artists' personal lives with heartbreaking clarity. I particularly dig the duo's harmonies as so beautifully showcased on the album's opening track:

I'm sort of a newcomer to Grizzly Bear. Beyond the time they randomly showed up at Ted Dancin after playing Kilby Court several years ago, I was largely unfamiliar with their work and, OK, a bit turned off by all the hipster hype. But, Veckatimest turned me into a believer. Who can resist this song? Plus, this video owns.

I first caught this Pennsylvania punk act in Austin and immediately fell for the singer who is a complete oddball. His strange, irreverent stage antics come through on Pissed Jeans latest Sub Pop release which embodies the sound of working-class catharsis. This song makes me want to take a drive and shake my fist out the window singing along to the chorus of jumbled growls.
