We're making our Best of 2009 lists - and checking them twice - for City Weekly's Dec. 31 edition. In preview, from now until next Thursday, I'll be sharing my favorite single tracks of the year. I'd love to hear what rocked your world in the dwindling days of the oughts.

I'm not a huge fan of Page France, but their side project Cotton Jones trades twee indie sensibilities for retro psych-flavored pop flair as on this jam:---

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to catch Red Red Meat featuring Tim Rutilli who went on to form Califone. The show reignited my love for his voice and I was thrilled when Califone released All My Friends Are Funeral Singers. The album serves as a soundtrack for a film of the same name. It's beautiful and haunting - and we have a chance to experience the sights and sounds up close and personal during Sundance 2010. Stay tuned for details.

Featuring members of Drive Like Jehu and Hot Snakes, Obits makes stripped-down, vaguely dirty rock that's nothing new or shocking. It just kicks ass and makes me smile.
