Winter Bike Lane Neglect

During winter with red-flagged inversion air, the city needs to promote travel that reduces emisions and pollution. But, bike commuting can be a mucky, snowy mess after a snow storm, for instance last Wednesday and likely tomorrow.---

Not just about getting my clothes dirty, this is a safety concern. Bikers are skirting snow piles at intersections or peddling in car lanes because bike lanes are neglected, putting bikers and drivers at risk for an accident.

I spoke with Joe Aguiler of Tranportation Mainanence & Public Services: "Our top priority is to move the majority of traffic through the city," which is vehicle traffic. "We are aware of the issue, but with our resources it doesn't always get done in a timely manner," says Aguiler. He could not recall the last time that snow plowing bike lanes was brought up during a department meeting.

If you are commuting downtown, stick with 800 South or 200 South, Aguiler says that they get top priority for plowing.
