Salt Lake Events For Cents: 1/6-12

If you are penny-pinchin' because the economy is down, or just plain frugal, but still desirous to experience some culture and compulsory indulgence: Look no further. Each week, I will inform the masses about the fun, the free, the charming, and the cheap.
A new twist on this burgeoning blog, I have organized it by category (Theatre, For Locals, Talks, Music)---, instead of by date.
Lots of fun things to do this week.
Theatre: Plan-B Theatre's 3rd Annual "Student Slam!" Imagine the fast and the furious of plays: Five 10-minute plays are created, rehearsed and performed in twenty-four hours. Local plays don't come cheap, usually ranging from $20-40, so this at ten measly bucks is a steal. You get professional writers, directors and designers joining 25 student actors for the 3rd annual event--a fundraiser for Theatre Arts Conservatory. @ Jeanne Wagner Theatre at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center, 138 W. 300 South, 801-355-2787, Fri., Jan. 9, 8:00 p.m., $10For Locals: Local Author Showcase Local authors will be tucked in to their own private nooks (as if they didn't get enough alone time), for Salt Lake's literary crowd's perusing. This will create an intimate space for Q&A, book signing or whatever you want to make of it. There will be seven in total, each with a unique new book to share. Whether you're interested in fiction, humor, mystery, or current events, there's something here every reader will enjoy. Authors include Ryan Shattuck (Revolutions for Fun and Profit), Charles Amonett (Visible Darkness, Hidden Light), Susanna Barlow (What Peace There May Be: A Memoir), Bonn Turkington (Velwythe), Steven Bates (The Fortuitous Redemption of Mordekiah Liebovitch), S.C. Talks: Karen Kasmausk presents Impact: From the Front Lines of Global Health Karen Kasmauski has witnessed more suffering and death than most, additionally being jailed and being held at gunpoint--the down-side of having one of the world's most sought-after jobs: National Geographic photojournalist. At Westminster, presented by the Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy, Karen will expound upon her experiences pertaining to the ecology of disease. Her book Impact: From the Front Lines of Global Health delves into diseases--AIDS, SARS, Cholera--from her stories. The underlying theme relates how geography is the root cause, be it borders changing, population increasing, or natural environment destruction. To portray this, she takes you from tearful, AIDS-stricken families in Mumbai to sensual gay bathhouses in San Francisco, and places in between. The lush photos reach out and pull you in, engaging your attention and illuminating the human dynamic underlying these pervasive problems. Music: 10 Acoustic Performer Night Free show at this eclectic venue. The stage will be graced by strumsters: Joey Pederson, David Williams, Glade Sowards, Trever Hadley, Will Sartain, Brian Oakley, Tony Lake, Cathy Foy and Nick Neihart. Don't recognize anyone you know? Time to get familiarized with the local music scene.
