FlickChart: Movie Nerd Time-Suck Deluxe

Movie nerds -- among our many other endlessly charming qualities -- make lists. We can't help it. It's probably genetic. And one Website perhaps better than any other is set up to exploit that weakness and suck us into massive quantities of wasted time. ---

The site is called FlickChart, and it's been around for a few years. The concept is fiendishly simple: It gives you two movies, and you have to answer which one you like better; if you haven't seen one or more of the proffered titles, you pass until you get a contest where you've seen both movies. Gradually, through a series of such head-to-head competitions, you form a list of your favorite movies. And of course you can compare it to the big list of all users -- which, not surprisingly, is dominated by stuff like The Dark Knight, Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings. Or to let your mind boggle at how many movies you have (or haven't) seen.

It's not always easy to get the list to look the way you think it should look, since you have to wait for the program to pick specific one-on-one battles for you (filters help expedite the process). And that's why it's sometimes impossible to stop -- in addition to forcing you to face such wrenching questions as, "Is This Is Spinal Tap better than Monty Python and the Holy Grail?" If you're facing a deadline, you've been warned.
