Summer concerts at Deer Valley

There are nights when the Deer Valley hillside feels like the best concert venue imaginable. It helps that fans can bring their own food and booze to the shows. Here's what's on tap so far for 2010.---
Groups ranging from the Park City Performing Arts Foundation to United Concerts to the Utah Symphony/Utah Opera make use of the Deer Valley venue, and each of them have shows worth checking out.
United Concerts just announced a whopper of a triple-bill for August 24, featuring blues legends B.B. King and Buddy Guy along with soul master Al Green (pictured). The $75 tix go on sale this Saturday at Smith's Tix outlets. There's no question this will be a great show, but I wonder how many extra security guards it's going to take to keep all the woman from running up on stage during Green's set. The Deer Valley stage is low, and anyone who saw Green at Red Butte Garden a couple summers ago will recall that the fans ran straight through the flowers in front of that stage to get a piece of Mr. "Peace, Love & Happiness."
The Park City Performing Arts Foundation has a series of shows ranging from pop to country to funk for its Big Stars, Bright Nights concert series. The lineup includes OneRepublic (July 4), Wynonna (July 20), Michael McDonald (Aug. 8), Earth, Wind & Fire (Aug. 20) and Ryan Bingham (Sept. 6). Tickets go on sale to the public today via the Eccles Center Web site. If you haven't seen Earth, Wind & Fire (pictured below), do yourself a favor and hop to it. Aside from them, Grammy-winner Bingham, the cat who co-wrote Jeff Bridges' tunes for Crazy Heart, should be a good Labor Day treat.
The Utah Symphony/Utah Opera Deer Valley Music Festival always features some pop acts--last year included Elvis Costello killing while fronting the symphony--and this year includes Ben Folds on July 17, along with the music of Led Zeppelin done symphony-style on Aug. 14. Tickets are available now through the festival's Web site.
