Does being Mormon supersede being American?

When I went out today, July 4th, my expectation was streets lined with the American flag. Not being an American citizen, I've always been intrigued by the way any national holiday triggers my mostly Mormon neighbors to decorate their curbs with your nation's flag.

So it took me by surprise on this the most patriotic of days to find few flags on display as I drove Sandy's streets.

In the past I have been struck by how restrictive life is for Mormons on Sundays. I have had friends who I assumed liberal and worldly say they cannot allow their children to swim in my pool because on Sunday apparently the devil is in the water. Or something similarly startling.

Is there something in the LDS faith handbook that does not allow its members to put out the American flag on the very day you annually celebrate independence from my country of birth?
