Tonight the Salt Lake City Council will be hearing the public’s thoughts on a $1 million general fund tax increase and a $1.1 million one-time judgment levy to help shore up lost sales tax revenue from 2009.---

The City wants to have frank discussion about the “T” word that even here in SLC causes many citizens to want to brandish their teabags menacingly at their duly elected servants. Still the city wouldn’t even being go down this road if it weren’t for the fact that the city’s sales tax revenue is down by 18 percent from 2009.

According to the city’s tax calculator, the proposed changes would mean a $36 increase for SLC citizens with an average priced home of $235,000. A SLC business valued at $1 million would likely see an increase of $278 in 2010. The council will vote to finalize the budget at the end of the hearing

Come Tonight, Wednesday Aug. 4 to the Salt Lake City & County Building, 451 S. State,  Room 315 at 6 p.m. Call 801-535-7600 for questions.
