Saturday Dew Tour report

Age was no factor Saturday in the Dew Tour Skate Park Finals, as 16-year-old Chaz Ortiz coasted his way to first place. ---

After being given a 20-minute run-around, I finally checked in at the media center and was on my way to the Skate Park Finals. The area around Energy Solutions Arena resembled an irritated street of New York City, with jaywalkers jumping out in front of traffic.

Inside the arena, fans gathered around the ramp to support their favorite athletes. To my left, a small crowd of teenage girls were yelling, “Ryan Sheckler is so hot!”

The Skate Park “Super Final,” as the announcer named it, came down to a competition under the near-blinding sun between Chaz Ortiz, Greg Lutzka, Ryan Sheckler, Paul Rodriguez, Ryan Decenzo and Carlos De Andrade. The seven-minute Super Final Jam began with a promising start, with ongoing tricks for an entire minute. After throwing out a big flip frontboard, a smooth kickflip 50/50, front blunt and a nose blunt, Ortiz, the youngest of the bunch, took the win with a score of 89.25.

Lutzka placed second with a score of 88.90 and Sheckler took third with a score of 84.55, and the teenage girls next to me were still screaming, “We love Ryan!”

Earlier in the day another talented young athlete, 19-year-old Dennis Enarson, won the BMX dirt final.

The four-day event featuring skateboarding, BMX and freestyle motocross concluded Sunday with the skateboard vert finals and BMX park finals. In October the Dew Tour will continue on to the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas for the Dew Tour Championships.
