Lounge Act Wednesday: Panic in the streets of SLC

Did you catch that distinct scent in the air? No, it's not fall. It's the cloud of patchouli that follows the traveling fans of Widespread Panic, who are playing in Salt Lake City for the first time in a spell. That's just one option for Wednesday.---
I can't lie. I've seen Widespread Panic (pictured) more than once in my years as a music writer/gig-goer/psychedelic-dabbler. And while I tend to prefer my tunes short and snappy, the Southern rock vibe of Panic was always more appealing to me than, say, the jazzy noodling of Phish. The Rail seems like a fine spot for the Spreadheads to kick it this evening, and be forewarned—the show is an early one, starting at 7 p.m.
Speaking of short, sharp tunes, the Depreciation Guild/Film School show at The Urban Lounge should be a winner, if a bit "shoe-gazey." And Burt's Tiki Lounge hosts the solo, acoustic stylings of former 7 Seconds leader Kevin Seconds.
If you're not in the mood for tunes, perhaps a jaunt to The King's English to meet author Allen Kurzweil is in order. He wrote Potato Chip Science, a tome dedicated to bringing science to life for kids. He'll be doing some experiments on site, and signing his book, at 7 p.m.
And if you're looking for some free entertainment, consider a jaunt to the Utah Museum of Fine Arts for a screening of Ha-Sodot (The Secrets), an Israeli drama about the intersection of Jewish and French culture driven by the heroine Naomi, a lawyer and daughter a revered Orthodox rabbi. The film screens at 6 p.m. It's part of the UMFA Anthropology Film Series.
