Lounge Act Monday: Glorious pop and serious talk

We have some wildly divergent options for getting out of the house and braving the onslaught of winter Monday night, and which one you choose probably depends a lot on your mood.---
Take me, for example. I'm still basking in the afterglow of a damn fine night of power-pop goodness, courtesy of The Apples in Stereo and their headlining set Sunday night at The State Room. What made the show all the more pleasing was that despite only 50 or so people showing up (shame on you, Utah. You missed out), the band led by freakishly talented Robert Schneider still killed it, delivering a fine show despite the lack of energy coming from the crowd. Songs like "Can You Feel It?," "Dream About the Future" and "Hey Elevator" from the band's new Travellers in Space and Time.
Now, given my happy mood, you might think I'd like a change of pace from live music. Au contraire! Not when the insanely creative Kevin Barnes is bringing Of Montreal (pictured) to town on their latest tour. The band is touring in support of their excellent new False Priest album. You can check out a video from the band here, and don't be late getting to In The Venue--opener Janelle Monae has a fast-growing rep as a live powerhouse. Show time is 7 p.m., according to our various ticket outlets.
Another couple musical options of note: Nick Moss and the Flip-tops are playing a show at the Sun & Moon Cafe, and if you've never done one of their dinner shows, it's a blast in Emigration Canyon. The Muertones are playing Piper Down Monday, and Subrosa holds it down at Burt's Tiki Lounge.
If I WAS ready for a chill, non-gig evening, I'd be heading straight to the Main Library for Dr. Reza Aslan's lecture on The Future of Islam. Obviously, quite the hot topic, and Aslan's speech is the 2010 Sterling M. McMurrin Lecture on Religion and Culture, sponsored by the University of Utah’s Tanner Humanities Center. A respected scholar and writer on religion, Aslan will discuss contemporary issues facing Islam. It starts at 7 p.m., and is free.
