Three end-of-summer releases that made quick exits from first-run theaters hit the second-run houses just in time for pre-Thanksgiving catch-up. ---

The strongest of the entries is It's Kind of a Funny Story, Ryan Boden and Anna Fleck's adaptation of the semi-autobiographical novel by Ned Vizzini. Keir Gilchrist stars as a troubled teenager spending a few days in a psychiatric ward, but it's Zack Galifianakis who steals the show with a smart, subtle performance as a fellow patient struggling with his own issues. It's only reappearing at the Cinemark Sugar House.

Coming to more theaters -- for less reason -- is the latest installment in the Resident Evil series, Resident Evil: Afterlife. More Milla Jovovich, more post-apocalyptic zombies. Someone keeps watching these things, apparently.

And because every animated film, no matter how pathetic, has to get a chance to ensnare more families in Utah, the dud Alpha and Omega comes back. Just remember when your kids beg to see it: They'd eat cotton candy at every meal if you let them, too. It's your job as a parent to know better.
