I don't want to offend the Bill O'Reilly types, so I'd like to wish everybody a Merry Christmas as they view this footage of the annual post-Thanksgiving retail stampede at a Buffalo, N.Y., Target store:---
Those who worry that merchants who wish their clients "happy holidays" are disregarding the, ahem, "reason for the season" should consider that merchants are the ones who, generations ago, relegated the second-most sacred of Christian holy days to a marketing ploy.
I'm not saying anything new here. I'm just wondering whether or not forcing store clerks to say "merry Christmas" during this annual festival of consumerist greed is really a good evangelical strategy. Frankly, I wouldn't want my religion associated with it.
