The first weekend of the CWMA showcases is finally upon us. It’s time to get out and see the best music Utah has to offer.---

As a primer, it might be helpful to read How to CWMA and then peruse the band bios. Now, you’re ready to choose from one to four CWMA options tonight and tomorrow.

Friday boasts Corey Mon & the Starlight Gospel, Sam Smith Band and King Niko at all-ages Avalon Theater. The music starts at 7 p.m., so those over-21 could head up State Street to Burt’s Tiki Lounge to catch Cavedoll, Fox Van Cleef and Plastic Furs starting at 10 p.m. Aside from CWMA events, local bands Fleetwood and Double or Nothing are releasing albums Friday.

Rest up Saturday afternoon because the music melange begins in Provo at Velour at 7 p.m.. Paul Jacobsen, The Continentals, Michael Gross & the Statuettes and Parlor Hawk share the bill. Up in Salt Lake City, beginning at 9:30 p.m., Holy Water Buffalo, Shark Speed and Bronco play at Club Vegas.

For a mixed bag beyond music for the weekend, The Persian Quarter opens today at Salt Lake Acting Company. Then there’s Hodgepodge with Blake Bard, which will be an evening of comedy, music and cabaret at The Complex Saturday night. More on the comedic tip, former SNL star Norm MacDonald will perform at Wiseguys on Saturday. But seriously, the CWMA showcases are the best bet this weekend.

February 6 is Super Bowl Sunday so mend your music-filled head and hunker down to see the Steelers battle it out with the Packers.
