Cinematic Shakespeare

Starting next week, Utah Shakespeare Festival takes its love of the Bard from the stage to the screen. ---

As part of Utah Shakespeare's 50th anniversary celebration, a series of six cinematic Shakespeare adaptations will begin its run at Southern Utah University's Sharwan Smith Center Theater on Thursdays at 7 p.m. Admission is free, with doors opening nightly at 6:30 p.m., and the full schedule of the screening series includes:

Feb. 24: Richard III (1956), starring Sir Laurence Olivier (pictured).

March 3: A Midsummer Night's Dream (1935), featuring Olivia de Havilland and James Cagney.

March 10: Romeo & Juliet (1968), the classic Franco Zeffirelli version.

March 17: Hamlet (1990), with Mel Gibson and Glenn Close.

March 24: Macbeth (1948), directed by and starring Orson Welles.

March 31: King Lear (1971), with Paul Scofield, and featuring a screening introduction by SUU theatre arts professor Richard Bugg.

Not coincidentally, three of the films featured are tie-ins to plays scheduled for Utah Shakespeare's upcoming 2011 season: Richard III, Romeo & Juliet and A Midsummer Night's Dream. Tickets are on sale now.
