After nine band showcases spread across three weekends, City Weekly readers and local music lovers finally chose the winner of the City Weekly Music Awards' band of the year for 2011 at the final showcase Saturday night.---

Pop-rockers King Niko proved to be the ultimate favorite of the few hundred folks on hand at The Complex's Vertigo Room, after they, the Lindsay Heath Orchestra and Cory Mon & the Starlight Gospel all delivered vibrant sets.

Heath's slow-burning brand of nouveau-folk got the show off to a fine start, with the dreadlocked frontwoman slowly building her orchestra behind her as she moved from song to song. Cory Mon and Co. next gave the proceedings an energetic jolt of roots-rock, complete with washtub-bass and more than a little twang. And King Niko wrapped up the evening with a sound blending bits of punk aggression with a decided desire to get butts moving on the dance floor.

After the votes were tallied and King Niko was announced as the winner, to the delight of a large posse of their fans still hugging close to the stage, DJ Flash n Flare displayed the skills that made him this year's winner of the CWMA DJ Spinoff--a fine way to end a fun evening, and a remarkably diverse three weekends of tunes courtesy of the some of the best local bands Utah has to offer.

This Thursday's issue of City Weekly will recap all the action of the past three weekends, celebrating all the bands and showcasing some of the killer photography of CW's Erik Daenitz taken throughout this year's showcases. Be sure to pick it up wherever independent thought and live local music are encouraged.
