Artists don't always know how to protect their work. Now there's free help on the way. ---

Beginning this month, the Salt Lake Art Center and Utah Lawyers are teaming up on a series of "Art Law Saturdays" workshops to help working artists and aspiring working artists learn more about the laws that apply to what they do. On March 12, the topic is "Music and the Law," including information on licensing agreements, how music publishing works and issues surrounding new technologies. April 9 features "Essential Law for Visual Artists," such as fair use guidelines and dealing with galleries. And May 14's "Publishing Law and Book Contracts" gives writers practical guidelines on how to negotiate a contract, the evolution of the publishing industry, copyright and more.

All workshops run 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. at Salt Lake Art Center (20 S. West Temple), and are free with no pre-registration required. Do that creative work with just a bit less anxiety about the fate that awaits that work in the world.
