Some quirky alt-rockers and local poets headline Monday nights options for your entertainment dollar.---

The Urban Lounge is hosting Akron/Family (pictured), an avant garde crew who delve into prog-rock and pop on songs that are incredibly dense (sonically speaking); they never met a sound they didn't like, as evidenced by the tunes on their ridiculously named new album, S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT.  Delicate Steve opens the 9 p.m. show.

Over at Mo's Neighborhood Grill, the Salt Lake Slam Finals get going at 8 p.m., with five competitors ultimately being chosen to represent Utah at the National Poetry Slam Finals. With audience members acting as the judges, this is your chance to help make Utah look good, and support some stellar local talent as well.

At Westminster College Monday, Novella Carpenter will talk about her urban farm in the middle of Oakland, California, and the book that she wrote about it, Farm City, at 7:30 p.m.

And finally, if you've always fancied yourself a singer, particularly one a cut above bar karaoke or the church choir, the Utah Opera is hosting open auditions for its chorus today at 4 p.m.
