Lounge Act Thursday: Soul, sippin' and sly wordplay

If it was a little warmer outside, I'd suggest we all meet up at the Salt Lake Bees season-opener for a brewski. Instead, try some of these ideas on for size.---

The Urban Lounge is hosting what I think will be one of the best shows of the week, if not the year. Headliner Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears (pictured) deliver a funk and soul extravaganza that will surely fill the dance floor, even though their lyrics deal with some pretty heavy-duty subject matter. And openers Those Darlins have some serious buzz thanks to their Southern-fried grrrl-punk style on their new album, Screws Get Loose. Been looking forward to this one for a while.

Over at Kilby Court, noise-rock duo Lightning Bolt will be laying waste to the place with a raucous set.  And in a couple of head-scratcher shows, old hair-metal dudes Bulletboys are headlining at Club Vegas, and Tesla's Frank Hannon is playing a gig at, of all places, Pat's BBQ.

Poet Rob Carney will be reading from his new tome, Story Problems, at 7 p.m. at Ken Sanders Rare Books. And you foodies will want to note the Rodney Strong Vineyards wine dinner tonight at the Silver Fork Lodge, where you can pair a dinner with a variety of tasty vino for $60.
