Lounge Act Thursday: Experimentation is the rule of the day

From experimental theater to killer hip-hop to aliens—that's right, I said aliens!—Thursday is jam-packed with attractions sure to get you out of the house.---
Let's start with ANIMA, a three-pronged bit of art that includes live theater, dance and video, all of them geared toward exploring some of the trickier aspects of life in the modern world, including living as a Muslim in the post-9/11 environment and the challenges for children and women in Afghanistan. ANIMA runs at the Sugar Space tonight through Saturday at 8 p.m. each night.
As for the hot hip-hop, it doesn't come much better than Dessa, the female voice of the Doomtree collective and a skiller rapper with a background in philosophy. Along for the ride are fellow Doomtree folks SIMS and Lazerbeak, and they're all doing two shows tonight, first at Kilby Court, then later at The Urban Lounge.
Over at The Depot, local Rolling Stone cover boys (almost! They're in the final four of the contest) Fictionist (pictured) are playing a show opening for The Janks and The Shivers. It's a cheapie for The Depot, just $5, so consider at least going and showing the Fictionist boys some support from SLC. I went to Provo last weekend to see them play on top of a parking garage, and about 2,000 showed up. Clearly Fictionist has reached a new level, no matter what happens with the Rolling Stone thing.
As for aliens, well, I lied. There aren't any aliens coming to town. But author Clete Smith is appearing at The King's English at 7 p.m. to read from his new book, Aliens on Vacation, which is geared toward junior high-age kids.
