Public Art Event: Sway'd

A gusty night could be perfect for checking out the dedication of a project that turns a vacant lot into a work of art. ---

The lot just west of the Capitol Theatre (50 W. 200 South) has been cleared to make room for a planned Ballet West dance facility. But instead of leaving a dead, empty space as so many long-gestating Salt Lake City construction projects have, the Young Architects Forum of the American Institute of Architects-Utah approached Salt Lake County about the possibility of using the space for something more vibrant.

The result in this case is "Sway'd," the winning entry from among 60 applicants spanning 13 countries. The field of more than 1,000 10-foot-high nylon poles will be a sculpture in perpetual motion, fitting for the site where dancers will hone their craft.

Tonight (May 20) at 9 p.m., the public is invited to a lighting ceremony and dedication. "Sway'd" will occupy the spot for at least 18 months, until construction on the facility is scheduled to begin.
