Memorial Day means an extra-long weekend for many, so no excuses for not getting out and throwing down.---
Even if that means a jaunt to Orem, where there's a hot show of modern dance-pop going down at the UCCU Center on the UVU campus. Opening is Mayer Hawthorne, the retro-hipster with a whole lotta soul. And headlining is pop maestro Bruno Mars, who is enjoying quite the chart hot streak between cocaine arrests in Vegas. In between is the reason I'm making the rare jaunt to Utah County: Janelle Monae. Coming on like a mix of Prince, David Bowie, Outkast and James Brown, she killed as the opener for Of Montreal last fall, and I have high expectations of what she can do on a big stage. Read our interview with Monae about her first year in the spotlight, then get to Orem. The show starts at 6 p.m., and there's no regular rush hour traffic to deal with, so head on down!
The City Weekly Street Team will be, appropriately, out at Miller Motorsports Park for the Superbike World Championships, sure to be loud, fast fun for the whole family. It's going all day, so by the time you read this, it will have started. Head west!
The Urban Lounge is hosting (at last report) a DJ set by Mayer Hawthorne after he plays in Orem, so that's a fine late-night dance option.
Up at the U, students from the Book Arts Program are showcasing their work from spring semester in a show called Booking a Brouhaha, all day at the Marriott Library. Not only will you be amazed at what the students in the program can do, you might want to sign up yourself after you see it.
