The Salt Lake Film Society is celebrating its birthday the way most of us do: with cake, music, entertainment and gifts. Except the gifts aren't for the celebrator, but for all of the friends. ---

The 10th anniversary of the Salt Lake Film Society has included events and special offers all summer, but the festivities hit the big time with this weekend's activities. On Thursday, Sept. 1, the public is invited to a birthday party at the Broadway Centre Cinemas (111 E. 300 South) from 4 - 9 p.m. for an evening of complimentary cake, a free film screening (the Oscar-winning 2007 musical Once) at 7 p.m., social time with Utah filmmakers Trent Haris (Rubin & Ed) and Richard Dutcher (God's Army, Brigham City), and a special announcement from executive director Tori Baker at 6:30 p.m.

That's just the kick-off for a week-long celebration of key SLFS films from the past 10 years, which will screen in a mini-film festival at the Tower Theatre (876 E. 900 South) Sept. 2 - 8. Representing each of the years of SLFS' existence will be Amores Perros (2001), No Man's Land (2002), Whale Rider (2003), Napoleon Dynamite (2004), March of the Penguins (2005), Brokeback Mountain (2006), Once (2007), There Will Be Blood (2008), Slumdog Millionaire (2009) and The King's Speech (2010). These screenings will be free to SLFS members, $5 per screening for the public or $10 for all 10.
