If you're looking for an economical, all-purpose wine to serve for Thanksgiving -- or any other time, for that matter -- you can't go wrong with Villa des Anges Cabernet Sauvignon 2009. ---

This wine, produced in the Languedoc region of Southern France, is new to Utah and sells for the consumer-friendly price of $8.99. I was perusing the French reds at the downtown Wine Store (255 S. 300 East) and this new item jumped out at me. I'm happy it did, because it represents one of the best wine bargains I've come across in a long while -- a helluva lot of wine for 9 bucks.

Dark ruby in color, this is a soft and fruity, easy-drinking Cabernet Sauvignon, with lots of cassis, licorice, and anise flavors, together with tobacco, black cherries, currants, hints of bell pepper, and some spice notes. The wine is fairly intense and concentrated, yet very quaffable, with tannins that are well balanced by the wine's fruit and acidity.

Villa des Anges Cabernet Sauvignon would be right at home on your Thanksgiving table, but would also be delicious paired with red meats and robust cheeses. It's a real crowd-pleaser, this one.
