Lounge Act Thursday: metal, roots, funk & soul

Just in case the insane wind storm Thursday (which the TV news will inevitably call "Windpocolypse 2011!" later tonight) doesn't cramp your style, consider some of these fine activities for kicking off December.---

The Artspace City Center is launching a holiday art show in its killer spot in the old ZCMI warehouse, and you can beat the gallery stroll crowd on Friday to check out the goods from more than 50 artists.

You might not remember Bang Tango, pictured, and there's really no reason you should. But some of us who grew up watching Headbanger's Ball on MTV will recall the colorful video for "Someone Like You" and a band who, thankfully, skipped the poofy perms of most of their peers. The band is still kicking around, and playing at Carol's Cove tonight.

The Urban Lounge hosts Missouri roots-rockers Ha Ha Tonka for a 9 p.m. show opened by The Trappers and Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin. Over at Kilby Court, Lake Mary hosts a CD release party at 7 p.m., with The Erin Rich Ensemble and Bearclause opening the proceedings. Ozomatli kicks off a two-night stand at The State Room tonight with a gig starting at 8 p.m., and Mickey Avalon headlines a show at In The Venue.

The Festival of Trees is off and running at South Towne Expo Center, and if you've never been, I can legitimately recommend the excursion. All proceeds go to Primary Children's Hospital, so obviously it's a good cause. And you'll see Xmas trees like you've NEVER seen before.
