It's the first weekend of the new year -- let's get it on!---
I mean that in as many ways as possible, of course. Let's focus on some cool stuff going down around town that you can partake in. Start Friday night at The Urban Lounge, where Dubwise returns to do that dubstep thing they do so well, starting at 9 p.m.
If you're up in Ogden, check out the homecoming gig for O-town native Spell Talk at Brewskis, always a good place, and always a great band to see live.
Back here in Salt Lake City, The Suicycles, Hello Amsterdam and The Fleet headline a fine showcase of local tunes at The Woodshed, while down in Provo, it's a pajama party with The Moth and the Flame and Book on Tapeworm Friday night.
SATURDAY
On Saturday, the Garage offers a hot double bill with Afro Omega and Lady Murasaki -- check that one out for sure. Eagle Twin, Cornered by Zombies and Settle Down bring the noise to The Urban Lounge.
The Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center is home to Plan-B Theatre's Student Slam, where you'll get to see the frantic work of some up-and-coming theater folks who write, produce and perform short plays all in a 24-hour sprint to the stage. Pretty cool stuff.
SUNDAY
Okay, Maceo Parker (pictured) isn't local. He's just one bad mama-jama, a funky sax-playing legend who's blown his horn alongside the likes of James Brown, George Clinton and Prince, besides doing his own funk-filled shows. Here's one for you -- an evening with Maceo on Sunday night, which means no opening act. Get to the State Room by 8 p.m., and get ready to sweat.
