Hello to all you road-spinning, scenery-watching, gas-station-eating, window-sleeping, favor-fulfilling, traveling-down-south enthusiasts! --- As you read this, I'm on my friend's laptop in a shitty truck (which will be funnier for me on Sunday when he reads this and sees I called his truck shitty), barreling down I-15 in all its majestic litter-filled majesty, 30 miles over the speed limit, with Crooked Fingers as the soundtrack to pick up a couch. Knowing my good buddy in the driver's seat, it will take us an hour to do this five-minute job of salvaging his personal sentiment and memories tied to what I can only guess is a brownish, weaved, three-seater covered in dog saliva and dust from the garage it's been sitting in, then booking it back to SLC in time for me to cover a show. We're going a little too fast to snag a photo that's any good, if you can call yellow-ish fields of decaying plant life scenery at this time of year, so here's something random I found at the last Gallery Stroll.

The next couple of weeks are big on randomized concerts but low on events; I guess most of the non-musicians packed up and went to SXSW. We'll go over the highlights for the next couple of weeks and we'll start things off with St. Patrick’s Day -- my heritage holiday, where millions celebrate how they wish they were us until they remember how much bullshit the Irish had to suffer through in their own country, followed by how they were treated in 1800s America as immigrants, and that's usually when they become as drunk as us so they can forget about it for another year. The Hibernian Society of Utah will be celebrating the event as usualwith a parade through The Gateway, along with several other festivities. Personally, I'd like to see City Weekly pull a flatbed trailer behind the van featuring writers and staffers playing poker while House Of Pain is blaring out of the loud speakers, but I'm doubting that's ever gonna happen. Come see what weird green shirt I'll have on this year, and remember to dress warm and have fun!

If drinking isn't quite your thing but you still want some action, then down in Provo you can catch some hot derby action as the Utah County-based Happy Valley Derby Darlins take on the Nevada East Roller Girls. We'll be chatting more about these gals later on, but for now, go root for the home team over at the UCCU Event Center, Saturday, March 17, at 7 p.m.

On Wednesday, March 21, we'll see the next installment of KRCL's Night Out. This month, the station takes over Gracie's and will fill the room with soul jams from DJ Planit and DJ Divine. The $5 special of the evening will be a pint of Cutthroat and an Angus Slider -- not too shabby of an evening. Go mingle with the community broadcasters from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

On Friday, March 23, WSU's Free Concert Series continues with a four-band showcase in the Shepherd Union Building. The Old World will be headlining an impressive lineup that includes YYBS, Four Leaves Left and I.7. If you're up in Ogden, please take full advantage of this series. There are a lot of bands from Provo and Ogden who just don't come to SLC too often and vice versa. It is always a treat to see what everyone else is doing just a few miles away, and this is one of those opportunities.

Speaking of that Friday, we'll be celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Poor Yorick Studios. Strange to think that it got started in a little warehouse around downtown SLC back in 2002 and now it's a multi-studio complex in South Salt Lake filled with dozens of artists covering several genres. Do yourself a favor and check out the over 30 artists, absolutely free, at the bi-annual open house. But be warned: This is a one-night event; no Saturday-afternoon showcase like in years past. Go celebrate, take in the art and maybe even buy some!

And then to wrap up that week on March 24, we'll see the debut of the Salt City Sirens Burlesque show. One of the latest troupes to form in what's been a resurgence of the danceable artform, these ladies have been hard at work getting their showcase down and are looking to show it off to you for just a mere $5. The troupe's debut will be held at Bar Deluxe ,kicking off at 10 p.m.; the evening will be hosted by Dreu Damian Hudson with a yet-to-be-named musical act. You can see they're totally ready to perform.

As for the blog: The next couple of weeks are going to be interesting as we review a local show, as well as Gallery Stroll for March, hit the ropes with a local pro-wrestling group, chat with a local comedian, preview the next dance show in town and interview the winner of the Radio From Hell Film Festival. At least, that's the plan today. Who knows what the next few weeks will hold? As always, we'll see what happens.
