Dear GYA, What the heck is the Hunger Games? I heard it's a story about a girl who is forced to compete in a televised battle to the death. Yippitty doo! I was in one of those, too; it was called the Running Man. Except I had to battle guys with flamethrowers and jet-packs.--- Is there anything to do today besides see a movie that ripped off my life story? - Ben Richards, on the run
Ben, it's not exactly the same. The girl uses a bow and arrow -- come on, totally different. As for today, stop running and start dancing by checking out John Brown's Body over at The State Room. They're an 8-man reggae crew from Boston that plays a unique blend of reggae, funk, ska, electronic and dubstep. The No-Nation Orchestra is also on the bill; doors open at 8 p.m.
Or for something completely different, head over to Mo's Neighborhood Grill for the Salt Lake City Poetry Slam Finals. The winner of tonight's event will be sent to Charlotte, N.C., to represent Salt Lake City in the National Poetry Slam this August. Last year, Salt Lake City placed eighth out of 76 teams from around the United States and Canada. The show starts at 8 p.m.
If you're in the mood for some acoustic indie flavors, the check out Donavon Frankenreiter over at the Depot. He's a longtime friend of Jack Johnson and actually has very similar musical stylings. He also has a huge mustache. So if you don't like his music, at least go check out his cookie duster. Doors open at 8 p.m.
