Gritty and raw. Those words are often used to describe music, but I don’t usually use them to describe the playlists I compile for Salt Lake City’s music live list.--- While there are usually a few organic songs scattered in the playlists, the scale always seems to tip with synth-heavy sounds.
This week, a week that happens to be perfect for getting back to the basics and getting dirty in the garden, I’ve put together a playlist fitting for any earthy endeavor. As different as Deer Tick’s down-homey track, "Ashamed" is from Khaira Arby’s internationally influenced beats, they both feel like natural expressions of music unadulterated by strong reverb or electronic layers. Electronica certainly has a well-deserved presence in today’s soundscapes, and I’m sure I’ll find a nice home for an electropop tune on next week’s playlist, but this week I’m tipping a hat to the unplugged. Celebrate a tiny bit of refuge from the digital world by plugging in and checking out some of the bands coming to town.
