As one enters booth # 105, one might notice the artist’s willingness and enthusiasm to talk about his work as much as the work itself. These wall sculptures are in a minimalist style, and although reduced are exciting and speak of philosophy, culture, myth, beauty, the environment, the American West, heritage and, above all else, nature. This wealth of meaning is the result of beautifully articulated works of art and a deeply passionate artist.
A prototypical wall sculpture is crafted of shaped panels of boxed canvas that have undergone many layers of treatment with ingredients as exotic as tea to give an ancient appearance. Upon this boxed canvas is applied a natural slab of flat stone, and to the stone naturally shaped and evenly spaced rocks fixed with steel. Such a mixing of media is highly distinctive and serenely beautiful.
According to Candee, he enjoys working with such elements to evoke the natural word that transcends the temporal state of the rushed existence of the artificiality of the day to day. Candee uses steel intentionally to provide a conceptual contrast of an artificial urbanity to the nature he loves so much for the sake of awareness. These materials evoke his love and devotion to the American West and its deserts, mountains and rivers. He said his work “reflects the peace and tranquility of the environment and helps me see the value in these environments and to express this to other people.”
While you are at the Utah Arts Festival, make it a point to stop by booth #105 to engage with a very passionate artist who will engage you in an important and timely subject while you engage in works of truly fine art.
