Glad You Asked: Andrew Bird, Peter Murphy and Burnell Washburn

Dear GYA, Can someone explain why I should care about Shark Week? Sharks only kill five people a year. Pfft, come on; there are so many other dangerous things that deserve a show -- for example: deer, auto-erotic asphyxiation, vending machines. Hell, even hot dogs kill about 70 people a year and I don't see a hot dog week.--- Anything happening today besides those weak-ass sharks? - Nancy Darwinlink, Riverton
Nancy, you have some good ideas there. I would watch the hell out of hot dog week. I'm not sure enough people are aware that encased meats are the silent killers. Here's what's going down today:
Experimental indie-rocker Andrew Bird will be performing at Red Butte Garden tonight. A typical Bird show includes engaging stories and a back catalog of nine studio albums, including that “unnamed song,” which became “Eyeoneye” on the 2012 release, Break it Yourself. Amadou & Mariam will also play. The show starts at 7 p.m.
The godfather of goth, Peter Murphy, will be onstage at Urban Lounge. The former frontman for Bauhaus released his ninth solo album in 2011, entitled Ninth, which included the singles "I Spit Roses" and "The Prince and Old Lady Shade." Murphy describes his latest work as "a continuation of the Go Away White trajectory; it has testosterone pouring out of it. At the same time, it's as beautiful as any female siren." The doors open at 9 p.m.
Head over to Library Square for the free Music at Main Concert Series featuring tunes from Burnell Washburn, Taken Root and the Free Speech Syndicate. Plus, City Weekly's The Word will be on site, snapping photos and giving away tons of sweet, sweet swag. The fun starts 7 p.m.
Other worthwhile events tonight:
- The always-free Brown Bag Lunch concerts continue at the City and County Building with performances by Doug Wintch and Anke Summerhill. The show starts at 12:15 p.m.
- The Hops on the Hill Beer and Concert Series will be going down at Deer Valley Resort and will feature the bubbly suds of Squatters Brewery and tunes by Jagertown. The show starts at 4:30 p.m.
- Geeks Who Drink pub trivia will be going down at Maggie McGee's, beginning at 8 p.m.
