Dear GYA, Because of Hurricane Sandy on the East Coast, it seems like everyone is tossing around the phrase "batten down the hatches." But the term is of nautical origin and refers to small battens used to seal hatchways on the sides of sailing vessels. As you can see, unless you live on a boat, you're probably using this phrase incorrectly.--- Are there any social situations happening today where I can annoy people with pointless sailing knowledge? - Capt. Frank Pinkerton, Magna

Capt. Pinkerton (if that is your real name), Have you considered that maybe the people saying that phrase live on houseboats? Think about it. Anyway, today offers plenty of opportunities to serve people with your sailing knowledge.

Alternative jam band Rusted Root will be onstage at The State Room tonight. Known for the incoherent track "Send Me On My Way," which was featured in the films Ice Age and Matilda. Even though it's been played a million times, no one is really sure what that song is about because it sounds as if the lead singer has a mouthful of Jell-O. The show starts at 8 p.m.

Soul and R&B singer Allen Stone will be performing at The Complex. City Weekly Music Editor Austen Diamond had this to say about him,"With an R&B band full of hard-hitters, Stone performed a late-night set at SXSW, which I caught this year, and his gut-wrenching, soul-soaked jams had me floored, even with the glut of music I had already seen. The kid’s music has grip." The show starts at 8 p.m.

Every Tuesday, City Weekly, TrueTV and Brewvies will be showing a free screening of the latest Sons of Anarchy episode. It's a story about a gun-smuggling biker gang and its  heart-torn beefcake who must choose between life on a Harley or the hilarious life of a stay-at-home dad. The comedy starts at 8 p.m. (21+).

A few other worthy events:

- Weber County Main Library will be showing a free screening of The Woman in Black, starting at 6:30 p.m.

- Log Haven will be hosting the Villain and Vixen Ball, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

- At Utah Valley University, check out a reading of Bram Stoker's Dracula at 7 p.m.
