On a weekend when there's only one crappy new release opening in theaters, there also happens to be only one crappy new arrival in second-run theaters. ---

Alex Cross marks the attempt at reviving the franchise -- based on the James Patterson books -- originally featuring Morgan Freeman as the titular psychologist/criminal profiler. The role is now in the hands of Tyler Perry, who only appears more competent because he's miscast opposite Matthew Fox hamming it up as his demented assassin adversary, and directed by Rob Cohen with an ineptitude that feels almost deliberate. Add a script that favors wild leaps of logic over following up on actual clues, and the decision to turn Cross into a vigilante with no concern for moral consequences, and you have one hot mess of a wannabe thriller.
