The Wasatch Cooperative Market will celebrate “The Good Life is Local” -- the connection between local growers and artisan cuisine -- tonight at Avenues Bistro for a membership drive.---

The Wasatch Cooperative Market will be Utah’s first community-owned, full-service grocery store. Hundreds of co-ops already exist around the country, but not in Utah, which is kind of an anomaly. City Weekly reported last year that the co-op had about 100 member-owners signed up--currently 171--but the organization needed approximately 1,200 to open doors.

"When we get to 400 or 500, we can start looking at sites for store location, and we will continue to seek additional member-owners," says Barbara Pioli, development coordinator. It's been three-and-a-half years in the works, but there have been some key mile markers, like a USDA grant from Food Cooperative Initiative--to promote urban development of food cooperatives--for $10,000 to be used in the second stage of the development (feasibility and planning). So this event will, hopefully, get it a few steps closer.

The drive will take place tonight, Tuesday, Jan. 29 from 5 - 7 p.m. at Avenues Bistro (564 3rd Ave.). Space is limited. To attend, RSVP to bpioli@wasatch.coop. Guests are welcome who are interested in becoming member-owners.

Avenues Bistro owner Kathie Chadbourne will demonstrate a delicious recipe of the house every half hour. She will also discuss where she sources her local ingredients and how that adds to the Avenues Bistro dining experience.
