In last week's Monday Meal, I shared my favorite recipe for Jamaican jerk chicken with you. Often, jerk chicken is served with rice and peas, which is this week's recipe.
After attending the Utah Arts Festival for the third consecutive year, I saw a lot of the same vendors from years past. While the pottery and paintings were beautiful, I yearned for new visual stimulation.--- But as I scoured the length of the festival, I heard new and interesting sounds the entire time.
Last week, Marissa Powell, aka Miss Utah 2013, got handed a convoluted, humdinger of a question at the Miss USA Beauty pageant. For the unaware, it all went south when Real Housewives of Atlanta and mascara-depository NeNe Leakes asked a three-part head-scratcher and Powell blurted out "Create education better."---
While there may be a major art event happening in town this weekend, Friday night was a somber evening for the Salt Lake City art scene, as two galleries officially closed their doors. --- The very public one on full display was Kayo Gallery, which, due to lack of public funding and the inability to continue on her own, left owner Shilo Jackson no choice but to shut the doors to the iconic alternative-art gallery that featured fantastic local artists and gave many of them a venue when more “established” galleries wouldn't dare feature them.
My carefully charted course of must-see performances from the lineup at the Utah Arts Festival on Friday included sets from regularly gigging acts and rarely booked special appearances. With everything from intimate performances to sprawling lawn concerts, I came to think of the card-size “Entertainment Guide” I received as a clown car.
With all the studio dance companies in hiatus or preparing for new performances in the fall, most of the dance showcases you'll find are out and about in festivals and weekend lineups. --- A lot of these groups are made up of current and former performers of major groups in town, most with art degrees in the field, displaying their talents to you at a bargain than you might find in a proper theater.
If you're looking to celebrate national Go Skateboarding Day by "Gleaming the Cube" at the University of Utah campus, you may want to think twice. If the University gets its way, "dangerous" skateboarders and bicyclists could soon be paying $100 fines.
Dear GYA, Finally, Instagram has video, which means not only can I take photos of the food I eat, but now I can document the entire process of enjoying the food.
