During the dog days of summer, one of my go-to white wines to sip is Bordeaux Blanc, from France. Dry, white Bordeaux wines are typically dominated by Sauvignon Blanc, which is blended with Sémillon and Muscadelle.
The lucky folks who saw Merle Haggard’s performance at Red Butte Garden on Tuesday night got to experience what it’s like to be in the presence of a true country legend—at least for one evening.--- Sure, Haggard is pushing 80, but he still has grit, guts and raw talent in spades, all funneled into a rich voice and accomplished guitar-picking and fiddling skills. Without any preamble, he strode onstage looking dapper in a suit, cowboy hat and sunglasses (after dark, because he’s “The Hag”) and struck up a rendition of “Big City,” accompanied by a full band of fiddle, lap steel, drums, guitar, piano and backup singers.
This past weekend, I threw another random dart at the board of local shows and nailed Friday night's show at The Urban Lounge right on the bullseye. --- An awesome lineup with four bands commanded the evening, kicking off with The North Valley followed by our old friends in Holy Water Buffalo, then the experimental rock of Koala Temple, with the “spiritcore” rock of Spirit Master closing up the evening.
In an alternate dimension, former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman Jr. never got into politics. In this universe, instead of his patented salt-and-peppery Ken doll haircut and smooth-talkin’ demeanor, Huntsman has long, flowing, metal hair, never wears a shirt and regularly flips off the crowd while playing keys in a progressive rock band called Wizard.---
SugarDaddie.com, the creepy niche-dating website that once tried to purchase the naming rights to Sugar House, is celebrating its 10th anniversary by offering to pay for your divorce.---
Though the Utah Blaze's 2013 season will probably go down as one of the worst in recent memory, at least wide receiver LaVaughn Macon capped it off with this WWE-inspired touchdown routine.---
Some of the more entertaining art works coming out of Salt Lake City have been the darkly captured paintings and illustrations by Grant Fuhst. --- A longtime resident of Poor Yorick Studios, the mixed-media painter has continually challenged himself to bring out the creative shapes hidden in the shadows, making him a constant standout at festivals and gallery showings across the valley.
