Hello to all you backpack-wearing, book-buying, pencil-sharpening, course-checking, dorm-sharing, holy-shit-school-starts-soon enthusiasts! --- With the school year quickly approaching, it looks like the valley is about to have a heart attack with anyone under the age of 35. Never before have I seen so many people declare they're headed back to school for one of many majors awaiting them on any given campus in the state. Good luck to all of you, and check CityWeekly.net later this week for a guide to local music from the summer to head into class with. In lieu of a 337 update, here's a shot of Brogan Kelby from the X96 Big Ass Show; you can see more photos of the event in this gallery here.

Going into events, this Sunday, the Geek Show Podcast peeps hold another Movie Night at Brewvies, where they'll be recording two episodes in the bar, then showing off two films for you to make fun of: Godzilla vs. Megalon and Robot Jox. As always, the entertainment is free, but the food isn't. Do tip the staff!

On Monday, we have the next installment of Put Your Mouth Where The Word Is, which has been relocated to Weller Book Works after Mo's packed it in at its downtown location. This month will be hosted by DeAnn Emett, with featured poet Cheryl Maddalena. The evening still has slots available to sign up, which you can do by checking out the event's Facebook listing.

Skipping down the road to Friday night, the Rose Wagner Theatre will play host to The Rose Exposed! The six main companies housed inside the theater's walls will present an evening of performances and workshops for everyone interested in what they do, as well as what they'll have coming in the '13-'14 season. This is a must-see event for anyone who loves the performing-arts community.

Next Sunday, The Woodshed will be doing something awesome for patrons, as it will put on an End Of Summer party in the spirit of customer appreciation. The day will include an Iron Chef BBQ finals (with free food for all), a cornhole tournament, Texas Hold'em Tourney, family photos, karaoke and more yet to be announced. You can head over to their Facebook link to see more details as they happen.

On Sept. 3, in St. George, the fourth annual DocUtah Film Festival will kick off at Dixie State College. This is a chance for anyone with a passion for documentary films to check out some of the best coming from the national (and some international) studios and independent filmmakers, as well as student submissions from the area. The fest will run Sept. 3-7; check out their website for full films and details.

In two weeks, something I can't speak much on but I'm presenting it here, the final Summer Of Death competition will happen on Sept. 7, the fourth installment of Rough Side Of The Trax. Head over to their website to get more info.

And then finally, on the same day, the Avenues Street Fair will happen. Taking over First Avenue between P and Q streets, the day will have over 20 performing acts and 200 booths for you to check out, from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. A lot of the details are hit-and-miss right now; just keep your eyes peeled to their website and be sure to go have fun at what will be one of the last great festivals of the summer.

As for the blog: Over the next few weeks, I will have a recap of a show from the weekend, look at a local letterpress company, chat with a local artist involved with gaming, talk to a stand-up comedian, check out a pop-culture artist and look at a podcast in a radio network. At least, that's the plan; as always, we'll see what happens.
