Drunk Driver Flees Crime Scene But Doesn't Abandon Girlfriend

A 22-year-old drunk driver went on a 100-mile-per-hour rampage on the west side of Salt Lake City demolishing a pay phone and snapping steel poles apart with his car. Witnesses described a horrific and reckless disregard for life, but to the driver's credit he at least picked up his girlfriend from the passenger seat and fireman carried her away, making for a slow, but considerate attempt to flee the crime scene.---
According the Salt Lake City Police Department watch log, witnesses reported the man driving “100 miles an hour” south on 900 West at roughly 3:22 a.m. Sunday, June 14. Things got too fast and furious for the drunk driver north of 800 South when he began to drift and skid at the corner of the intersection.
The vehicle plowed through a pay phone, snapped off several concrete and steel poles at their bases and even broke through a half- inch steel cable before coming to a stop inside a Smith's Grocery Store parking lot, with the vehicles hobbled with two snapped axles.
The driver then exited the vehicle and hoisted his girlfriend into a fireman carry and took off—only to be soon apprehended by a police K-9 unit.
The individual's blood alcohol level was recorded at .21 and he was processed for driving under the influence.
