City Weekly took first place in eight categories in Utah’s annual Society of Professional Journalists awards, held Thursday.

Notably, Stephen Dark and Eric S. Peterson held down the top spots in six of the nine news reporting categories: criminal justice, business/consumer, education, government, religion/values and personality profile. ---

City Weekly staff and freelancers took home a total of 18 awards in the contest, hosted by the Utah Headliners, the state chapter of the national Society of Professional Journalists. City Weekly competes against The Salt Lake Tribune, the Deseret News and the Daily Herald in these awards.

But perhaps the highlight of the evening was hearing Greg Wrubell—the night's MC, known locally as the voice of the BYU Cougars—say "I Watched Governor Herbert Eat Muffins For Two Hours" as he announced Colin Wolf's first-place win for best blog post.

Dark and Peterson are also finalists in the national Association of Alternative Newsmedia awards, the results of which will be announced in early July.
