For the savvy art lover, the Utah Arts Festival is a smart, fun way to accumulate wonderful works of art without having to pay gallery prices. One superb example of this is Salt Lake City resident Jodi Steen (booth 100), whose works have a look of classical Modernism, but she charges a fraction of what you might pay at galleries in town for pieces strikingly similar.
As it is every year, the Utah Arts Festival’s Fear No Film festival showcases funky local variety in its Utah Short Film of the Year program—this one perhaps even funkier and more varied than usual. University film programs, local competitions from throughout the previous year and productions by non-profit organizations mix in a program that runs from light-hearted animation to grim psychological drama—but the upbeat works were among the most satisfying.
The state of Utah's fight against gay marriage took a hit Wednesday when a panel of judges from federal court of appeals ruled that the state's law forbidding same-sex couples to wed is unconstitutional. The loss at the U.S. District Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit, in Denver, means that if Utah wants to continue its fight against gay marriage, it will have to take its case to the entire 10th Circuit court, or U.S. Supreme Court.
Dear GYA, Today's ruling legalizing same-sex marriage in Utah is a huge travesty. According to my personal religious beliefs (that everyone should follow), marriage by definition is between a bigoted man and sheltered woman.

A month after threatening to slap down Snowbird’s nine weekend-long Oktoberfest celebration, the Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control on Tuesday did an about face, giving unanimous approval to Snowbird’s request to pour beer at the event. In May, the UDABC commission announced it would intensify the scrutiny it gives to single-event permits, which Snowbird has used to put on Oktoberfest.
