Short reviews of new theatrical releases in Utah for Aug. 1:

Scott Renshaw finds some unique appeal in the unconventional stream-of-consciousness rhythms of the James Brown biopic Get On Up (pictured), but gets bogged down in the spirit-meets-science hooey of I Origins.

MaryAnn Johanson is charmed by the loose-limbed family dramedy of Joe Swanberg's Happy Christmas.

Also this week: Feature reviews of Marvel's comedic space epic Guardians of the Galaxy, and the 12-years-in-the-making domestic drama Boyhood.
