Local Releases: Rap, Rock & Soul
New albums from Mark Dago, Mimi Knowles and Gloe

As you read this, I'm knee deep in Salt Lake Comic Con stuff, so this entry is gonna be super short! The only non-release show album we're gonna talk about is the latest from Mark Dago. The Rotten Musicians emcee has had some killer solo material; my personal favorite is his 2011 full-length Kill Screen, which uses video game themes and sound effects for beats. This cassette tape called Team Scanners is only five tracks long, serving as a precursor to his coming full-length. The songs on here feature Kurious Jorge, Mega Ran, Adam WarRock & Jef Doogie, with the tracks made by Fischloops. You can only snag physical copies right now by being at Comic Con from Mark himself, just find him at one of his panels on Saturday and hit him up.
Getting to release shows, tonight we have two, the first happening at Urban Lounge as we see the latest from Gloe. This is an experimental math-rock band out of SLC featuring Brian Fell, Ian Cooper, Dan Actor and Chris Jensen. They've been around for over a year and have earned a nice niche in the rock community. For their debut EP, Vestige, the band sought outDryw Owens at Little Russia Recording in Sacramento to put some awesome touches on the album. You can snag it tonight as the band plays with Dark Seas (returning from tour), Suburban Birds and Lucida Tela opening the show. Tickets are $5 and the doors open at 8 p.m.
Meanwhile, down in Provo, we'll see the debut full-length release from Mimi Knowles. The Provo-based pop/soul performer has been working hard the past few years, mainly putting out singles and creating grand performances up and down the valley. His new EP, Something New For A Change, has got a mix of old-school big band and modern solo performer, like if Prince decided to jam with Reel Big Fish and took out the ska. You can snag a copy of the album tonight at Velour as he plays with Vincent and special guests. Tickets are $8 and the doors open at 8 p.m.
