Movie Reviews: The Intern, Hotel Transylvania 2, Pawn Sacrifice

Two historically-based dramas and the warm, fuzzy comedy stylings of Nancy Meyers are among the new releases in Utah theaters this week.
Meyers (Something's Gotta Give, It's Complicated) brings us The Intern (pictured), with retiree Robert DeNiro teaching dot-com CEO Anne Hathaway important (and often adorable) life lessons. Pawn Sacrifice tells the story of 1970s American chess champ Bobby Fischer, but turns it into an underdog sports movie that undercuts Fischer's issues with mental illness. The documentary Peace Officer provides a compelling exploration of militarized local police forces through the story of a former Davis County sheriff's determined investigations. Meet the Patels offers funny, insightful romantic comedy in documentary form, as an Indian-American actor considers the traditions of his parents for finding a wife.
Eric D. Snider finds at least some amusement in Hotel Transylvania 2, where Adam Sandler continues to show that his childish humor can work if it's actually aimed at children.
Also opening this week, but not screened for press: Horror director Eli Roth pits stranded Americans against South American cannibals in The Green Inferno.
In this week's feature review, the pivotal moment in the American gay rights movement is reduced to tedious cliches in Stonewall.
